故事主旨
英國詩人 Ted Hughes 在面臨太太自殺的喪妻之痛時，還要面對自己尚未成年的小孩，不希望讓他們在小小年紀就承受如此重的人生負擔。因此，他開始著手寫一本童書，敘述一個名叫豪加的男孩和一個五十呎高的鐵巨人之間的情誼，並在故事中假託許多情節，藉以來向自己孩子解釋媽媽的自殺行為、生命的自然法則等道理。這本童書在1968年發行，書名叫《The Iron Man》。

三十年後，這部電影被拍成電影，架構仍然是小男孩和大巨人，但時間來到了美國五０年代的冷戰時期，情節主軸和角色也大量加入及更改許多。雖然已和原著精神截然不同，但導演 Brad Bird 新編寫的故事大綱，仍然是讓人感動及發人深省的。主旨放在鐵巨人從小男孩身上體會到『生命』後，發現自己當初居然是被設計成武器後的種種故事，全片帶有些許的反戰意味。

可惜本童書作者 Ted Hughes 還等不到電影完工就已在1998年罹患癌症辭世了，使得本部片在1999年上映的意義更為濃厚。它在去年還榮獲了美國動畫獎權威『安妮獎』的９項大獎，包含了最佳年度動畫，幹掉了其他四部優秀的作品：【蟲蟲危機】、【埃及王子】、【南方四賤克】與【泰山】。你這輩子千萬不要錯過這部經典動畫鉅作！

  • In the scene where Kent is using the Hughes' phone, the humorous oven mitt hanging on the wall beside him appears to be a stylized version of the "family dog" from Bird's animated short of the same title which appeared on "Amazing Stories".

  • "Frank" and "Ollie", the two trainmen that Kent interviews after the derailment, are caricatures of Disney classic animators Thomas, Frank and Ollie Johnston.

  • When Hogarth first shows the Giant his Superman comics, the theme music from the Max Fleischer Superman cartoons of the 1940's is heard in the background.

  • Executive-produced by Pete Townshend of The Who. Townshend also produced a concept album based on the same book as the film.
