Research Plan

1. Multimedia Interactive Information System (MIIS):

With the advances of computer software and hardware technologies, Multimedia Interactive Information System (MIIS) will be available in our daily life. The applications of IMIS include Interactive Television, Distant Learning, News-On-Demand, Movie-On-Demand, Electronic Shopping, Electronic Library, Telemedicing, Video-Mail, Telecommuting, Game-On-Demand, and Tele-Conferencing, which are the most promising ones in National Information Infrastructure (NII).

In MIIS, large amount of multimedia data is stored in distributed high performance multimedia server. The hierarchical storage devices of multimedia server consist of CD juke box, disk array and main memory. Users can query and access multimedia data in the client connected by network to the server. The client may be a workstation, a PC or a set top box connected to the Interactive TV. The real time multimedia database management system of multimedia server is responsible for processing the query and managing multimedia programs. After the processing of billing system and the encryption of security management system, the queried multimedia data is transferred to the client through the network. Therefore, the client can provide the users with continuous display of multimedia information in real time. Users can browse the multimedia information interactively with fast forward, fast backward, pause and resume, or user’ desire.

2. Structured Video Computing:

With Structured Video Computing, mechanisms for image indexing and video indexing will be proposed with interactive annotation. The features of interest may include attributes of objects, data, roles, object ID, color, texture, object shape, spatial relationship between objects, scene change, object motion, etc. This mechanism provides an efficient method to access images or video subsystem without browsing the whole image database or the whole video data. Corresponding to the indexing, appropriate data structures and representations will also be proposed. Image query, spatial query and video query languages are developed and associated access methods are proposed. In this way, a user friendly database supporting content-based retrieval can be achieved.

3. Mobility Management in PCS Network:

Personal Communication Service (PCS) network is the integration of cellular Network and conventional wired network. To support user mobility, the locations of the mobile stations (MSs) should be constantly tracked using a database. The widespread deployment of PCS will lead to a tremendous increase in the number of updates and queries to the location database. The centralized, stand-alone Home Location Register (HLR) in GSM can be a potential bottleneck. Besides, in case of the location database failure, incoming calls may be lost. According to the analysis of the load in HLR, we suggest to replicate the HLR in order to increase its capacity and reliability. We evaluate the effects of the number of replicas in terms of query response time, misrouting probability of incoming calls and average cost per query. Another issue incurred in the replicated databases is the data consistency. A concurrency control protocol based on modified Read-One-Write-All (ROWA) protocol is also proposed.

4. Intelligent Agent on Web:

The rapid growth use of Internet and World Wide Web (WWW) let WWW has been a great treasure. Where to find the desired information has become a severe problem. Many search engines help us to dig and find information from the WWW. However, there are some problems in current search engines. What we need is a more personalize tool to help us travelling the Web, searching information, buying or selling things and making orders. The tool will act like an agent in our real life, such as stock agent, house agent and insurance agent. The agents will know a user's preference and monitor user's behavior, and make suggestion at right time. In this research, we build a more friendly and personalize agent to assist users in web searching. The agent will be implemented as a local proxy. Because the proxy is an intermediary between Browser and the Web, the proxy can access messages from users and the web. And we use IBM WBI (Web Browser Intelligent) as our programming toolkit. WBI is a software development kit developed by IBM. It helps programmers to add proxy function into their programs easily. An intelligent shopping agent will be built for testing.
